Following the recent problems with the armed Talon SWORD discussed in the previous post, Foster-Miller's MAARS robot has been delivered to the US army.
It is a lot tougher and more robust that the SWORD and has been undergoing refinement for some time. There is a YouTube video from 2007 at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQf0Q0JEdtE
UPI reporting the acquisition http://www.upi.com/Security_Industry/2008/06/05/Military_receives_new_MAARS_robot/UPI-12831212718000/ said that
| Quote: | | The robot's non-lethal capabilities include broadcasting the operator's voice through mounted loudspeakers along with lethal force protections that include a M240B medium machine gun. |
William Ribich, the group president of QinetiQ North America technology solutions, Foster-Miller's parent company, was quoted as saying,
| Quote: | (The) government has been working with us over the last 18 months to develop and provide an innovative and evolutionary approach to combat situations that address the battlefield of the future.
The MAARS robot is now ready to provide the needed core platform to develop tactics, techniques and procedures for using armed, yet human-controlled, robotic ground systems. |
