Inaugural Podcast 08282007 - THE 2007 DEMONSTRATION!

Visit http://www.auvsi-institute.org/html/podcasts.html to download the podcast.

I hope this podcast reflects the amount of fun I had traveling to and covering this exciting event for AUVSI. This was actually my fourth demonstration at Webster Field, but this time, I had none of the responsibilities of participating in the demo, and was able to experience it on almost the same level as the thousands of spectators who were there to witness what has become a technological spectacle. This year, there were seventeen (17!) different unmanned aircraft systems operating flawlessly, and working in close concert with several advanced unmanned ground vehicles to help guide what had to be a sweltering Marine Corps fire team performing a mock building raid out in mid-field. My hat's off to those guys, far from the crowd, the big-screen, the barbecue--it was hot!

Most organizations at the demo were able to speak freely about their systems and experiences, but unfortunately, a lot of terrific discussions about leading-edge unmanned systems got left on the "cutting room floor", because there just isn't enough room to include everyone's content (seriously, would you listen to an hour+ long podcast?) Hopefully, the sound bites that did make it into the final mix offer some hint about what went on that day, and maybe that will be enough to entice you to make your own pilgrimage to Webster Field for the next demo. It's an incredible experience.

I'll confess, this was my "first time" creating a podcast. I've never -really- been comfortable in front of a microphone, and trust me, being the person holding one took some getting used to. The way I see it, it's the interviewees who do all the work--they're the subject matter experts who, more often than not (sometimes with a bit of coaxing) eloquently articulate the benefits and features of their products and services while under the duress of having to "perform" in front of Mr. Microphone...all the interviewer has to do is try to ask interesting, intelligible questions (well, and keep the sound equipment working!). Anyway, I'm grateful to all the interviewees, even if their material wasn't used.

Did I mention the hours and hours of reviewing content, editing, mixing, and documenting what eventually gets posted? It's a labor of love, and I can promise you-- future podcast postings will feature abbreviated commentary! Wink

Hey, speaking of future podcasts, the next one will feature interviews with several representatives from companies exhibiting at this year's AUVSI show in Washington, D.C., where there was an -amazing- array of new capabilities presented. There are hours of great topics to choose from! So, stand by until next time, and in the meantime, entertain yourselves by linking to the websites of the interviewees and demonstration participants, whose hyperlinks are generously provided below. I'll talk with you next time ----->
